Acts 10:25-26 – “As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, ‘Stand up; I myself am also a man.”’
As God spoke to Peter in a vision and Cornelius through an angel, the Lord orchestrated their meeting. This is a revolutionary chapter in Acts as Peter was led to a gentile and entered his house, which was unheard of in the Jewish world. God would use Peter to reach out to the gentiles and Peter would go on to preach the Gospel, making clear what the world needed to focus on.
When they did meet, Cornelius fell down and worshiped Peter. Immediately Peter lifted Cornelius up and told him that he was also a man. In today’s world people feed off of adoration and praise. They feel validated when someone recognizes them. They expect to get recognition and feel generally entitled. Peter would have none of this. He made sure to quickly revert Cornelius’ focus off of himself and onto the Lord!
Today, may we revert people’s gaze off of ourselves and onto the Lord. Your job and privilege is to make your visible selves, invisible, and make your invisible God, visible. When you talk to people may you lift up the name of Jesus and make it clear what your love and affections are focused on. We are simply beggars showing other beggars where the bread is.
